Lincoln Memorial University, or LMU for short, is a private four-year co-educational liberal arts college located in Harrogate, which is a city in Claiborne County, in the US state of Tennessee, with a small population of nearly 3000 inhabitants (2000), because of which, until 1993, when it was incorporated as a city, was treated as a census-designated place.
LMU was established in 1897 and it was named in honor of Abraham Lincoln, its Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum housing the wolrd 3rd largest Lincoln items collection. It currently has a total enrollment of more than 3000 students, and offers educational programs at various levels.
LMU's athletic teams are known as the `Railsplitters`, which compete in NCAA Division II in the South Atlantic Conference, in 14 sports, for both men and women, including in cheerleading, basketball, tennis, volleyball, soccer, golf and cross country. Their distinctive colors are blue and gray.
Among LMU's noteworthy alumni, there are: Nelson Pizarro - 2007 All American, Major League Soccer player, Scot Shields - Major League Baseball pitcher, Lee Smith - American fiction writer (awarded the honorary doctorate of letters), Jesse Stuart - author, Don West - writer, civil-rights activist, Charles Holland - one of the 5 Deming Masters and Founder of QualPro, Inc., plus few others.
